Omega-3 Testing

Is your diet lacking in omega-3s? The Omega-3 Index measures the amount of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA) in your blood to inform your circulatory health. Omega-3s have been found to keep cells younger for longer. With a level below 8%, you should consider a supplement. Omega-3s occur naturally in oily fish, but regretfully most people do not eat the recommended two portions per week.

We hear lots about the health benefits of omega-3s, naturally-occurring fatty acids found mainly in fish. Indeed, they are considered important foundations of good nutrition.

Thankfully you can test your omega-3 levels easily with an Omega-3 Test Kit. Manufactured by WHC – well-known for their world-class fish oil supplements – the kit helps you quickly address symptoms of omega-3 deficiency. It does so by revealing which score you achieve on the Omega-3 Index.

The Index determines the levels of omega-3 EPA and DHA in your blood, key metrics for heart, brain, joint and eye health. Raising your Omega-3 Index is an important step towards better overall wellbeing.

With a level below 8%, you are in the Intermediate or Undesirable range and should consider using a daily supplement containing 500 to 1,000mg EPA+DHA. The Omega-3 target range for optimum health is 8-11%.

The Balance of Omega-3 and Omega-6

The ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 in the blood is an important barometer of heart health. In the west, our tendency is to over-consume omega-6 fatty acids from meat, dairy and vegetable oils, while neglecting heart-healthy omega-3s. This gross imbalance might be the root of many diseases in modern society.

Consuming less omega-6 and more omega-3 will help you achieve the optimum 5:1 to 2:1 balance as opposed to the common 15:1 ratioWith the easy-to-use Omega-3 Test Kit, you can identify whether your omega consumption is out of balance.

What the Science Says About Omega-3s

- EPA and DHA contribute to the maintenance of normal blood pressure with a daily intake of 3g EPA+DHA; the maintenance of normal blood triglyceride concentrations with a daily intake of 2g EPA+DHA; and the normal function of the heart with a daily intake of at least 250mg EPA+DHA.

DHA also contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function and vision with a daily intake of 250mg.

- DHA maternal intake supports eye and brain development in the foetus and breastfed infant if consumed at 200mg DHA per day on top of the recommended daily 250mg EPA+DHA for adults.

- DHA contributes to the normal visual development of infants up to 12 months of age with a daily intake of 100mg DHA.

It's about time laboratories clear up the confusion over different analytical methods in use for fatty acid profile evaluation.

It could be questioned whether it's wise to indiscriminately judge every test result according to the healthy 8-11% Omega-3 Index reference value. This question was posed to Professor von Schacky, co-inventor of the Omega-3 Index and founder of Omegametrix GmbH.

“The fundamental problem with fatty acid analysis is an uncontrolled emergence of analytical methods. Depending on the method applied, the result can differ up to a factor ten.

“This is one of the reasons why Professor Harris and Jo Wyckmans (WHC founder) decided on fine-tuning the standardised HS-Omega-3 Index Test. It is the only test to which the 8-11% reference value applies.”

More than 80 scientific projects are based upon the HS-Omega-3 Index Test. Respected research groups throughout the world use this standardised method of analysis, from Nobel Prize-winning Elizabeth Blackburn to Harvard Medical School, the University of Seoul and the University of London.

The scientific world is pleased to finally have a standardised method to work with. Analytical results will hopefully show better matches between laboratories in the near future. In Europe, Omegametrix GmbH is the reference laboratory for determining the original HS-Omega-3 Index Test used in the clinical studies. This test is made available to you by Nutrogenics in cooperation with Omegametrix GmbH.

Water for Health is the official distributor of this simple, yet effective, self-administered omega-3 test kit.

Test Your Omega-3 Levels Today

Our Test Kit may be the gold standard in omega-3 analysis, but it couldn't be easier to use. All you have to do is prick your finger, place a drop of blood on some filter paper and fill out your personal details.

Afterwards, simply pop the sample in the Stamped Addressed Envelope provided and send off to the testing facility in Belgium. Results are emailed to you within a few short weeks.

Remember, an HS-Omega-index between 8% and 11% is highly recommended if you want to maintain optimum health.

Heart and Cardiovascular Disease

Heart and cardiovascular disease is a general term used to describe arteriosclerosis or the hardening of blood vessels from a build-up of calcium plaque or calcium deposits. This is a result of fatty substances found in cholesterol and other residues.

Cancer, heart and cardiovascular disease are the biggest killers in today’s Western civilisation. Heart and cardiovascular diseases are often brought about by an unhealthy lifestyle: not enough exercise, an unhealthy diet and undue stress. People with a healthy and varied diet, and no negative stress, run a much smaller risk of heart attack than those who do not monitor their diet, exercise little and are subject to huge amounts of negative stress.

Here are the 6 factors that determine an increased risk of heart attack:

- Genetic predisposition
- High lipoprotein level (a)
- High blood pressure
- High serum homocysteine level
- Smoking
- Excessive serum cholesterol level

It is urgently advised that anyone belonging to one (or more) of these high risk groups get themselves tested for:

- Calcium plaque in the coronary artery
- Oxycholesterol
- Homocysteine level in blood serum
- Lipoprotein-a or Lp-(a)
- Low HDL content (beneficial cholesterol)
- High triglyceride levels

It is not cholesterol but oxycholesterol that is dangerous

It is not the total amount of cholesterol that is important; it's the amount of bad (LDL) cholesterol, the ratio between LDL and HDL and the extent to which the cholesterol is oxidised. These factors are referred to as the oxycholesterol level. Oxycholesterol is harmful to the arterial walls. Cholesterol is likened to oil: when oil sets, it can't be poured from the bottle any more. Likewise, when cholesterol is oxidised, it can no longer flow through the arteries.

It is not likely that traditional physicians who carry out a cholesterol test will measure the amount of oxycholesterol. Always ask your GP for clear information. You should clarify the ratio between bad LDL and good HDL cholesterol if a cholesterol test is carried out on you. Someone with LDL 150 and HDL 30 is more at risk from heart disease than someone with LDL 150 and HDL 90.

Too many physicians only take the total cholesterol content into account and routinely prescribe cholesterol-lowering drugs from a cholesterol level of 220. Also ask about the homocysteine level (read on for more details).

A healthy alternative to cholesterol-lowering drugs

Following a healthy diet, taking regular exercise and losing weight if you are overweight is the best way to lower blood cholesterol and avoid heart and cardiovascular disease. If you eat lots of fruit and vegetables resulting in a low saturated fat intake, and your cholesterol is still unbalanced, the following is recommended:

- Reduce your intake of all saturated fats. A reduction in the saturated fat intake is the most effective way of lowering blood cholesterol.
- Limit your daily intake of cholesterol.
- Introduce olive oil into your diet. There's a reason the Mediterranean diet is often dubbed the world's healthiest. Olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids (oleic acid or omega-9), antioxidants and squalene and helps to lower LDL cholesterol.
- Limit the use of coffee, black tea and coke.
- Eat foods rich in vitamin B (grains, fruit, beans, leafy vegetables).
- Vitamin B12 and folic acid help to lower the homocysteine level.
- Eat more complex carbohydrates rich in plant fibre.
- Drink green tea regularly.
- Eat plenty of garlic, onion, chillies and shitake mushrooms.
- Take 1g EPA-DHA or 1.8g pure EPA.
